Graduate Spotlight - Alex Lynch

When a hobby becomes a career

Often, when a person has had a hobby for a long time, it can eventually begin to occupy more space in the brain than the primary activities of everyday life. This is when it stops being a pastime and steps into the fulltime realm. And this is exactly what happened with Alex Lynch. Before enrolling in the Academy, Alex worked as a food processor and then on to nursery assistant. While these are professions that require devotion and time, Alex found herself leaning more and more towards her camera.

“I wasn’t always focused on photography, but over time I realised I love capturing pretty much everything. My interest grew as I started paying more attention to visual storytelling. What began as a hobby gradually became something I wanted to take more seriously.”

Photography has never been more prevalent than it is today, with billions of images shared online daily. But for those who really are serious about the craft, there is much more to learn than simply pointing a phone and clicking. Alex wanted to understand her equipment, and with that, how she could enhance her ability to elevate the images she captured.

“I discovered the academy through online research. What stood out to me was the balance between technical training and creative development, which felt like the right environment to grow both my skills and personal style.”

The Academy provides a well-rounded in-depth exploration of photography. From the camera, lenses, lighting and kit to the history of photography through to contemporary photography movements. All of these combined promises to enrich and enhance the photographer’s way of seeing.

“The most challenging part was pushing myself creatively, stepping outside my comfort zone, and learning more technical aspects of photography. At the same time, that was also the most interesting aspect- experimenting with new techniques and learning how to communicate ideas visually.”

Unexpected lessons

As students progress through their studies, they often find themselves surprised by some of the lessons they pick up along the way. And these lessons are not just course work. Higher-level education is not an exercise in absorbing data and memorising facts; it’s about opening your mind and challenging your own perspective.

“I learned a lot about patience and confidence. Photography taught me to trust my creative instincts and not be afraid of making mistakes, which turned out to be an important part of the learning process.”

Ther are also lessons to be learned about the life of a photographer and the business of being a professional. All of the Academy tutors are practicing photographers, putting them in a unique position of not only teaching accredited course work but imparting their knowledge and personal experience from working in the field. Photography is often mistaken for a solo endeavour, when the opposite is in fact the truth.

“I was surprised by how collaborative and supportive the environment was. I didn’t expect the tutors to be so responsive, especially with how often I reached out, but they were always incredibly helpful and friendly.”

Endless opportunities in the real-world

Alex is now a graduate and is paving her path to a life through the lens. Her interests lie in wedding and event photography, which will always have work opportunities. As she continues to develop her portfolio and subsequently her photographic style, Alex is taking on small projects and seeking out collaborative opportunities. With a fascination with people, stories and telling those stories through images, there is no stopping this talented graduate as she snaps her way to a fruitful career.

“I see myself working professionally in photography, ideally as a full-time wedding and travel photographer, with a strong portfolio and a clear creative identity. I’d like to be collaborating with clients or brands while continuing to grow artistically.”
