Fine Art Photography

Fine art is fine art, regardless of the medium. As with all fine art, fine art photography is a means of creative expression and it is a medium in which to conceptualise an idea or a vision. Just as a painter must understand paint and canvas or a sculpture needs to know the limitations of stone or steel, a fine art photographer must first understand their tools. Becoming familiar with the capabilities of your equipment will allow you to run free with your imagination and use the camera to the best of its potential.

In the academy, we understand the value and indeed the profound impact that fine art photography can have on a photographer's career. In this article, we'll look at fine art photography as a career choice and how our photography courses can help you master it, as well as many other genres.

What is fine art photography:

Photography comes in many forms and is often mistaken as the reserve of more commercial endeavours. But any means of expression or creativity can be deemed fine art and fine art photography is no exception. The intention of the artist is to create and to express something from within, so when a photographer picks up a camera and decides to generate an image that they have envisioned and imagined, it is then a piece of art. There are no rules with art. Pursuing a fine art career can be more challenging than a commercial option because it is a subjective and competitive realm. But when a creative person has that urge, it is simply impossible to ignore.

Why pursue fine art photography?

  • Limitless freedom of creativity - This allows photographers to experiment and express themselves.

  • Emotional depth - An artist can reach profound levels of emotional connection and insight. Art is capable of providing a fascinating study of the human condition through visual narratives.

  • Intellectual challenge - While there is much freedom, an artist must also answer to themself. Critical evaluation and the pushing of boundaries is both exciting and challenging.

  • Cultural impact - Creating art is an opportunity to inspire debate, participate in culture and society and it can be the legacy or the mark a person leaves on the earth.

How can you succeed in fine art photography?

Success comes in many forms but whatever the intention of the artist, we all need to make a living. Artistic vision and skills are wonderful starting points but if you want your work to be seen and if you wish to get paid, there are skills and approaches that can help enormously.

  • Cultivate a unique artistic vision: Study the works of established fine art photographers to inspire and inform your approach, but be true to yourself and be fearless in your work. There is only one of you!

  • Master technical skills: Before you even begin to shoot, it is crucial to build a solid foundation in photography basics. Lighting, composition, and post-processing are your friends. Continuously update your knowledge to keep apace with evolving technologies and techniques.

  • Develop a cohesive body of work: Your body of work is your calling card. A defined style that makes your art uniquely yours will help you to stand out. Focus on creating a series of images that reflect a coherent theme or message.

  • Build an online presence: Your art is also your business. Build a good quality professional website and use social media to showcase your work. This will connect you with your community as you gain visibility.

  • Engage with the art community: Networking cannot be overstated. Attending exhibitions and participating in workshops can open doors to opportunities and provide valuable feedback.

  • Navigate the business of art: Do your homework and familiarise yourself with the market, including pricing, marketing, and copyright laws.

  • Exhibit your work: Competitions can be a great way to gain exposure. Get to know galleries that align with your aesthetic and be persistent.

  • Become goal-oriented: Set clear, achievable goals and think of rejection as a motivation rather than an obstacle. Continuous learning through workshops, courses, and personal projects are a great way to keep you focussed on your goal.

By working hard at your craft you will begin to develop a personal style and voice therefore making your own mark in the art world.  If you run the business side of your art like a professional, you can carve out a successful path in fine art photography. Remember, success only comes from passion, dedication, and resilience.
